Small businesses that sell products should take full advantage of the holiday season and try to increase sales around Christmas.

Small businesses can increase their sales around the holidays, because most people are doing a lot more shopping than they normally do. Make sure to get prepared for the holiday season to take advantage of the opportunity for increased sales.

Advertise Products as Holiday Gifts

Small businesses who sell their products all year round, should appeal to holiday shoppers by advertising their products as holiday gifts. For example, if a small business sells candles during the year, the business owner should make a few holiday scented candles and market them as holiday gifts. Know who the gift would be perfect for when you’re marketing presents. For instance, the candle business would market the gifts as great for one’s sister, mom, friend or coworker.

If the small business has a website set up, change the front page to include holiday advertising. Show customers how the product can be used for the holiday or state why it would make a great Christmas present. Have pictures of the products gift wrapped in holiday packaging.

Use Holiday Packaging to Seal the Deal

If most of the businesses products are sold online or are shipped to customers, package the products differently during the holiday season. If someone is sending a friend or family member a gift for the holidays, she is going to want it to wrapped nicely. Small businesses can do this low cost by wrapping products in plain brown paper, decorating it with a couple holiday stamps and ribbon or twine or by purchasing wrapping paper at a local dollar store. People will be more likely to buy products if the wrapping is seasonal and festive.

Offer Specials and Discounts to Customers

Many businesses gain new clients and keep loyal customers through offering specials and discounts. Everyone is looking for deals around Christmas. The holiday season is the time to offer customers free shipping on orders over a specific price or buy two get one free specials. This works well with customers who are going to buy multiple products from the same business for friends and family. For example, someone might purchase homemade, soy candles for everyone in her family. If one of the places that she regularly shops is offering a buy two get one free special, she’s more apt to buy from them.

Host an Open House to Showcase Holiday Items

Host an open house at one’s place of business to showcase gift items. Offer discounts and free gift wrapping to shoppers. Pass out hot chocolate, apple cider and Christmas cookies to get shoppers in the holiday spirit. Send out invitations to friends, family members, neighbors and anyone else who might benefit from the open house.

To increase sales and income during the holiday season, advertise products as Christmas gifts, use holiday packaging, offer specials and discounts and host an open house to showcase holiday items.
